August Social MediaTrends Recap & September Predictions

Howdy, homies! 🤠👋 It’s time for our favorite blog of the month… our monthly social media trends recap! Let’s dive right into what was hot in August and what we predict will take over in September.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #1: VERY DEMURE, VERY CUTESY

If you haven’t been up to speed with “Demure” yet, WYD?! 🤯 At 115.6 million likes (and counting), it’s safe to say that TikTok creator, Jools Lebron, took our FYPs by storm in August. This social media trend has not left our minds since, and we don’t see it leaving the internet anytime soon. We saw brands across all niches and industries jumping in, like Owala, Steve Madden, and the Houston Texans Football team. As Demure grew in virality, we saw celebs like Khloe Kardashian, Olivia Rodrigo, and Jimmy Fallon (featuring Sabrina Carpenter and Zoe Kravitz) join in, too.

Demure is a trend that is particularly easy for any brand to jump in on, so it was no surprise to see hundreds of brands join in on social media. It created an opportunity for brands to frame their product or service  as desirable in a light-hearted, comical way that allowed them to bond with their communities — all while broadening their reach. This is the perfect recipe for social success if you ask us!

The homies had to jump in on this one. Were we demure, or no? 💁‍♀️

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #2: THE OLYMPICS

The 2024 Summer Olympics took place through the beginning half of August. The games took over Paris, France — and our social media feeds. It would truly be a disservice to review social media trends without covering this cultural phenomenon. We all remember Mckayla Moroney’s iconic “not impressed” reaction from the 2012 Olympics, so we were on the edge of our seats waiting to see what meme-worthy content we’d get this year. They did not disappoint — hellooo Snoop Dogg

However, as digital marketers, we pay extra special attention to brands that leverage trends on social media. First, we raved about Benefit bringing Emilie Kiser and Avery Woods to Paris to see a few of events. They provided us with juicy BTS shots that made us feel like we were right there with them. Parmigiano Reggiano also deserves major props for their partnership with Giorgia Villa, Italian Olympic gymnast. They made her “the world’s most famous cheese ambassador” through a photoshoot that went absolutely viral. 🤌 This iconic cheese brand further built upon their credibility by positioning an Olympic Silver Medalist as the face of the brand. These partnerships helped the brands bond with their audience by saving a seat for them as they follow along with the games.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #3: SHORT ‘N SWEET

Sabrina Carpenter has been trending all 👏 year 👏 long 👏 and we can’t say we’re complaining. 👀 She dropped her newest album, Short ‘N Sweet just in time to secure her spot in our social media trends recap, and let us tell you — she earned it! Upon its release, this album was EVERYWHERE: on our TikTok FYPs, IG feeds, and office playlist (duh). Sabrina is known for her iconic, witty lyrics, making her songs become viral hits on the regular. Aside from the album’s success, her clever lyricism inspired users to create content to her newly trending audios.

Sabrina and her team did not take social media marketing lightly with this drop. On TikTok, she was offering an exclusive profile frame of the kiss mark featured on her album cover art to any user that followed 5 steps:

💋 Follow Sabrina on TikTok

💋 Follow Team Sabrina on TikTok

💋 Save her latest single, “Taste,” to Spotify or Apple Music

💋 Like Sabrina’s latest TikTok

💋 Post a TikTok using “Taste” as the sound

Users RAN to get their own profile frame and followed the steps. This resulted in all of her TikToks related to the album and the newest single to earn 28.7 million likes and 213.7 million views.
