5 Things To Do When You're No Longer Feeling Excited About Social Media

It’s always important to stay in tune with your mental health and wellness, and it’s NO secret that spending too much time on social media can have a negative impact on your mental health.

Over the past couple of months during quarantine, I made an effort to try and connect more with other social media managers (via our Group Zoom Calls) to see how I could help provide guidance during this time with their social media strategy. However, a recurring theme that came up during each call was that so many people are just drained from social media, particularly Instagram.

Instagram is hands-down many people’s favorite social media platform because it’s great for discovering new things, getting inspired, and connecting with friends. However, it’s also notorious for creating “monsters” of accounts that are just on the platform to get followers and likes.

Many social media managers hear it again and again -

“I just want our account to get to 10k”

“What can we be doing to grow even faster?

“Why does this competitor have more followers than us?]

… and we usually get burnt out trying to think of ALL the creative ways to make our accounts the best, even when it doesn’t feel like they are.

If you aren’t loving your social media right now, don’t worry! You’re not alone. Here are some tips to get back into the swing of things:

1 - Figure out what topics you DO want to post about

Is the content you’re creating still enjoyable for you? Are you actually excited about the topics/images/themes you’re sharing about?

If not, definitely consider a refresh. Look deep into what you are posting and if it makes you happy or not. If it doesn’t, switch it up! This is exactly when we recommend downloading our FREE 9 Pillars of Instagram worksheet

2- If you’re sick of “creating,” take a second to “consume”

What are other brands (not in your industry) doing that you could implement in a similar way?

What types of fun, different content do you naturally like or engage with as a consumer or follower? Try posting content that YOU like to see!

Look around for inspiration. “Spin” the content you enjoy consuming, and see if you can create anything similar to it for your brand!

3- The “P-Word”. Pinterest!!

Pinterest is usually the best place to find inspiration because it categorizes their photos in a way that YOU want to see based on their algorithm and your preferences (kinda creepy, right? But so cool.). You can save and create mood boards with images and graphics that inspire you!

4- Read a magazine

Sometimes consuming content in one medium inspires content on another. Usually, when I flip through magazines, I end up jotting down ideas from their headlines or subtitles and use them for caption inspiration for clients!

5- Take a break entirely

Literally. Delete the app for the day/night. Silence all notifications. Sometimes we just need a reset to get our creative juices flowing and to get us in the mindset of creating!
