MAY SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS RECAP & JUNE PREDICTIONS

Hey homies! Happy June ☀️👙🍉 You know what a new beginning means… your May trend recap is IN!!! ✨  We know that keeping up with all the social media trends is a full-time job in itself, which is why we’re here to lighten your load. After all, what are friends for? 🫶 Let’s jump in!

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #1: DRAKE X KENDRICK BEEFIN’

May started out with a bang with Drake & Kendrick Lamar’s beef that took our socials (& the entire rap community) by storm. Not only did this specific feud feel more personal than any other in recent music history, it quickly became opportunistic for memes and trending audios across Tiktok & Instagram.

Along with trending sounds, memes, reaction videos, and commentary from influencers and users flooded our socials and kept the conversion alive.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #2: BABY BIEBER

Has anyone checked on the Beliebers? They are not okay!!! Baby Bieber is otw and we couldn’t be more thrilled for the happy couple! 💖 Their pregnancy announcement flooded our socials and quickly became a *moment* to act on as SMMs. While we saw our fair share of Bieber Baby recreations, our favorite was this iconic number from Waterboy. They used this pop culture opportunity as a way to announce a favorite limited edition flavor reentering the lineup (genius) & they were QUICK with it and arguably started this trend just hours after the initial pregnancy announcement release.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #3: THE MET GALA

The Met Gala ignites pop culture trends across multiple social media channels and often sets the tone for the year’s fashion and cultural discourse as one of the most high-profile fashion events in the world.  Themed around the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute exhibition, the gala becomes a ground for creativity, inspiring new trends in fashion, beauty, and especially social media content. The global media coverage and the subsequent social media buzz ensure that the looks and themes presented at the Met Gala influence not just the fashion industry but also pop culture, sparking conversations, imitations, and adaptations across various social platforms. This event acts as a barometer for upcoming styles and a showcase for innovative design, making it a critical moment for setting and observing social trends.

As SMMs, we love seeing brands lean into these types of pop culture opportunities in their content to not only engage their audience (& potential new customers) but to relate and create a sense of community. Brands who are able to create a community, especially an engaged one, know that promoting products in a directly-salesy way is out and creating a bond and engaging with the audience is in.  The new age of the Marketing Flywheel is no joke, but the brands who get it, get it. 💅

Poppiand Rayvi both slayed the game with the Met memes and we are loving it! They are both great examples of accounts that know how to attract, delight, and engage with their communities and are always quick to hop on a trending pop culture moment.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #4: CHALLENGERS RELEASE

The film Challengers had its moment during release week & we saw plenty of brands hop on the trend to play into the pop culture event. 🎾 Because Zendaya has a loyal fanbase in the Gen Z/late Millennial community, this was the ideal audience to target when promoting Challengers and incorporating it into social strategy.

Our favorite use of Challengers in social media was Emma’s Olives post putting their own spin on major moments from the movie & the press tour. We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, hopping on these trends is a crucial piece to a well-rounded social strategy

JUNE PREDICTIONS

The forecast is in! We can expect to see continued use of maximalism in designs & lifestyle content, 3 minute Reels, & more meaningful content (quality over quantity!!!).
