The Dos and Don'ts of Business Scaling for Social Media Agencies

The journey from solopreneur to social media agency owner is no small feat — if anyone knows this, it’s our CEO Becca Bunch! 💁‍♀️We hear people asking how to scale a biz aaaaall the time, and Becca has always been candid (hiii, Soft SMM! 👋) when it comes to sharing the steps that helped her make six figures, achieve work-life balance, secure her ideal clients, and more!

Ready for the inside scoop? 👀Here are some of her top dos and don'ts for business scaling!

THE DOs OF BUSINESS SCALING

DO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR GROWTH

A rocky foundation is no way to start business scaling — and this goes for your mind too! It’s important that you make personal investments (not just in your biz!), whether monetary or timely. This can include enrolling in courses that expand your expertise or opening up new bank accounts to ensure you’re properly tracking income and revenue.

Additionally, say “YES!” to growth opportunities like speaking appearances, blog swaps, and trades. These are key for getting your name out there and giving you first-hand experience in promoting yourself and showing off your expertise. This will help build your confidence and allow you to know your worth so you can properly market yourself and your team.

💡 Pro-tip: make room for 1 networking event per month! The valuable connections you can make at these events are priceless! So many of our clients (especially when we were first starting) came from networking.

DO SET BOUNDARIES

By now, you’ve definitely heard us preaching about boundaries. But when we can attribute our social media agency’s  44% year-over-year growth to setting boundaries… how could we not?

When it comes to business scaling, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is key, and it all starts with boundaries like defining clear office hours. At Homemade Social, we’re available to clients via email Monday through Thursday from 9 am-5 pm, and Fridays 9 am-12 pm. Trust us, setting these hours and STICKING to them is crucial! This has allowed us to say “buh-bye” to the days of working over 40 hours per week and feeling like we’re always on-call for our clients.

When outlining communication, setting clear boundaries is equally important. Texting, voice texts, and DMs, are big “NOs” for client communication. For efficiency and documentation, we strictly use email. The only exception is we do use OpenPhone to accommodate emergency texts from clients. This allows us to still keeping our work numbers and personal numbers separate.

(Psst… if you’re interested in implementing OpenPhone in your service-based or social media agency, you can get 10% off the first 3 months here!)

By implementing these boundaries and outlining them in our contracts, we’ve not only protected our time and energy but also created a foundation that supports efficient business scaling! This policy creates clear expectations for clients and ensures they always know when they can reach us.

DON’Ts OF BUSINESS SCALING

DON’T LET MENTAL BARRIERS GET THE BEST OF YOU

Business scaling means becoming self-employed, which can lead to you missing the praise from your boss and coworkers. Keep a brag book so you can keep track of your wins — big or small! Whenever you achieve something awesome, like a client post, a standout blog post, or a high-performing ad, snap a screenshot and add it to your folder. Include analytics, testimonials, and feedback too. These serve as reminders that you are capable of achieving your goals and can help you bounce back from imposter syndrome.

Check this folder monthly to remind yourself of your progress and accomplishments. Embrace that you’re growing and learning as you go, and understand that it’s okay to pivot and adjust. Let go of the fear of not being good enough, and don’t wait until everything feels perfect—believe in yourself and your journey toward successful business scaling. 💪

DON’T SKIMP OUT ON INVESTMENTS

There are certain investments to make early on in your entrepreneurial journey, like website hosting and a professional email setup. For your social media agency, securing a custom domain and email address enhances your professionalism and credibility.

That being said, don’t overlook the importance of investing in high-quality branding, and translating this to your business cards and website! Consider investing in a skilled Web Developer to ensure your website is as impressive as your work. 💅

While these costs add up, they’re essential for building a solid foundation for business scaling. Strategic investments like these have not only helped to enhance our social media agency’s image but also set us up for long-term success that just keeps growing.

We hope this blog post was helpful in unlocking business scaling guidance for your social media agency!
