The One Change Your Social Strategy Needs to Keep Up With Instagram’s New Feed Display

Instagram is keeping SMMs on their toes this year with yet another update, this time changing the app’s iconic 1:1 square to a full screen 9:16 display for all photos, videos, and carousels.

ABOUT IG’S NEW FEED DISPLAY

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, took to Instagram in early May to share about the full-screen layout that is now slowly rolling out to users. Mosseri shares that the purpose of the change, though an arguably undeniable copy of TikTok’s interface, is to make the photos and videos more “immersive” by utilizing more space on the screen.

HOW TO OPTIMIZE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

As Instagram tries to keep up with TikTok, this update puts video content at the focus of the app, which Mosseri has stated Instagram intends to prioritize and further develop in 2022. In fact, the platform is already making progress in this direction as new Instagram Reel features are popping up left and right, and Meta revealed in a recent earnings call that IG Reels now make up more than 20% of the time that people spend on Instagram

From a consumer standpoint, this full-screen display update would better blend together Instagram grid posts and IG Reels to make a more cohesive feed. Once this update officially rolls out to all users, IG Reels will be necessary for brands to include in their social media strategy in order to keep up with the algorithm that currently favors Instagram Reel content. Don’t worry, the work is worth it. IG Reels are KING for discoverability.

HOW TO USE IG REELS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

We love using IG Reels to educate followers about our brand, show personality, connect with consumer pain points, and highlight products. They’re a great way to have fun with your brand and create a relatable voice that will foster a relationship with your audience, which is important for later securing a sale.
