Tips for Creating Pins for Pinterest
Creating pins for Pinterest? Here are some steps to help you create the perfect pin!
If you don’t know, now you know-Pinterest is the #1 social media site that can draw traffic to your website or blog. I learned this recently and it was very surprising to me, but when I saw the numbers and did more research it all began to make sense!
In order to understand this better, it is helpful to view Pinterest as a search engine, rather than a social media platform. People often find themselves on Pinterest because they are looking for something in particular, and many avid pinners refer to blog posts to help them get the answers they are searching for. With that being said, if you have a blog and are looking to increase engagement, having great Pinterest posts are going to benefit your traffic immensely.
So, let’s walk you through several steps for creating pins for Pinterest that will get lots of clicks!
1. Create a Pinterest Board Exclusively for Your Brand
Before you start to create your pins, you should first take a look at your Pinterest account. Is it organized? Does it represent your personal brand well? If you have a board dedicated to your blog specifically, you’re already one step ahead!
The reason you want to create a board dedicated to your brand is because when someone loves one of your pins/blog posts, they are more likely to refer back to your Pinterest page and read your other posts! Having all of your posts concentrated in one area will help guide the reader to your content, give them a better feel for your brand, and help direct traffic to your website. Make sure to make this your first board on your profile, because people are more likely to click it if it’s the first thing they see!
2. Carefully Craft Your Message
No matter what your services are or what your posts are about, there is always a way to effectively market them. Look at your posts and think to yourself, “In what way can this benefit others?”. The goal is to take the focus off of yourself and your brand and place it on the potential reader. For example, if you are a travel blogger and you are showcasing your most recent trip to the Maldives, think about how you can rephrase the title of your Pinterest post in order to apply to the reader. For example, instead of titling your pin, “My Trip to the Maldives”, you can rephrase your title to say, “Tips and Tricks for Navigating the Maldives” or “10 Insta-worthy Spots in the Maldives” (including a number always helps to attract attention!).
Let’s say your business is a hair salon. Say you have a page on your website that lists your prices, and all of the options are under $150. An effective Pinterest cover post could say, “10 Trendy Haircuts/Styles under $150!” or “Affordable Hair-coloring in the Phoenix Area” Your blog post/ web page may not be written or organized in a way to directly addresses that title, and that is okay! As long as you can gather all of that information from your post, then you are safe to put it as a title. Keeping your titles short and sweet, and including the word, “you” are some helpful tips as well!
3. Get Comfortable with Your Software!
Here are a few free websites/applications that provide templates you can utilize to create the perfect pin!
Each of these websites operate a bit differently from one another, so it is important to become comfortable with each of them in order to best identify all of your design options. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see that there are templates that were made specifically for Pinterest posts, and you are able to browse through them to find and edit the perfect one- or just start from scratch with your own design! If you have a creative mind and already have a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, feel free to utilize those tools as well!
While you’re designing, keep in mind that ideal pin sizes are 735 x 1102 pixels.
4. Find Images That Are On-Brand!
Many of the websites/applications I mentioned in #3 provide free stock images you can search by category to use! They are limited however, so if you’re in need of a bigger variety of images, I have provided a couple of free stock image websites that are my go-to’s:
If applicable, don’t be afraid to take your own photos, too! Incorporating professional pictures of yourself or your employees in your pins help to give the reader a visual representation of the people behind it, which creates memorability and a sense of trust that entices them to revisit your blog! Make sure that these photos match the aesthetic of your brand and flow together cohesively. If the photo features colors that mimic that of your brand colors, you’re doing it right!
5. Focus on Your Text!
The most important part of your post is the text that creates your title. At this point you’ve probably spent lots of time perfecting a caption that will be the most clickable, so now is the time to use it! Although the imagery you carefully selected is important, it should not be the first thing your audience notices about your pin.
Big and bold text that emphasizes the most important parts of your title is key to grabbing the reader’s attention. If your caption features a number in it, for example: “5 Ways to Help Your Instagram Grow”, it is a good rule of thumb to enlarge the number and make it stand out from the rest of the text. Another way to break up your text is by using different colors, fonts and font sizes.
With that said, I would stick to a maximum of two different colors and two different fonts for your title. I like to plan my pins around my title, then I add my imagery and rework and play around with the size and placement of my title based on the way that everything flows together!
Here are some examples of pins I have designed for Becca’s personal blog in the past:
6. Re-pin Later!
The goal is to be constantly growing, right? With this growth, you’re going to welcome plenty of new followers to your website who may not have seen some of your older pins yet! This is why it’s important to re-pin your old pins in order to keep people reading all of your favorite posts. To do this efficiently, use the “Looping” feature within Tailwind. It also might be fun to update the designs of your pins if you want a change or if you think your target market might feel more enticed to click something that looks fresh and new!
I hope this blog post was helpful for you in discovering tips for creating pins for Pinterest! Follow these steps and your Pinterest is going to look incredible. I can’t wait for your brand to flourish!!
