3 Tips for Managing Your Social Media During Election Week

Four years later and here we are again: election season. With political messaging flooding our feeds, it’s hard to know how to stay connected with your followers amidst all of the election chaos. Do we join in? Stay out of it? Read on for our top three tips for navigating your client’s social media during election week!

STAY APOLITICAL

If you’re going to take anything from this blog post, this is it: do not post political content unless your brand is clearly aligned with a political party. This goes for before, during, and after election day. Think about the people that make up your audience. They’re likely a diverse group landing on all ends of the political spectrum. If you post content leaning towards one side or the other, the relationships you’ve spent SO much time growing and fostering will be impacted.

This is not to say you should never advocate for a cause you believe in, but it is important to be mindful of the implications that can occur if a portion of your target audience feels alienated and upset as a result. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if a political statement will be worth it for your business. Our best guess? It’s probably not.

KEEP SHOWING UP

Like we mentioned, political messaging has been and will continue to take over our feeds during election week. A busy feed means a lot of content competing for users’ attention. Understand that, as a result, your reach and engagement rate might go down during election week. That is okay! It is only temporary. Don’t let this deter you from creating and posting your usual content.

Keep showing up for your audience and consider keeping content lighthearted by posting memes, offering a discount code, or sharing tips relevant to your niche that your audience would enjoy. Your followers will likely find your content refreshing and a nice break from everything else filling their socials at the moment.

KNOW THAT ADS WILL BE IMPACTED

Your business may struggle to compete with political ad spending. Increased political spending combined with ads revolving around the upcoming holiday season… now that’s a lot of competition! Be aware that your ad spending will likely increase if it has not already.

We hope this blog post was helpful for you in learning how to navigate your client or business’ social media during election season! In the meantime, we’ll catch ya on the ‘Gram and in our weekly social media newsletter. Chat soon!
